Term ?Bespoke? Ruled a One-Size-Fits-All to the Delight of New, Professional Visiting-Tailor Service, Berkley Brewer

Had the Savile Row tailors been successful in their attempts to protect the word, we would have had to comply with the ruling, and used the term ?made to measure? instead to define what we do. This would have meant making small adjustments to the way we promote our business. We?re delighted that the Advertising Standards Authority reached a sensible decision in what really amounts to a silly game of semantics.?
By providing its clients with a full consultation and tailoring service as standard, delivered in the comfort and convenience of their own home or workplace, Gifford believes Berkley Brewer has developed a unique proposition.
?To our knowledge, there?s no other company in the UK doing what we do,? he says. ?Until now, if you wanted to get measured up for a suit, and select the fabric you wanted it made from, you would have had to travel to the nearest tailoring outlet.? Cleverly, Berkley Brewer has turned this paradigm on its head, and now has a number of highly trained individuals working across the country, offering clients a full and thorough measuring and swatch selection service, wherever they want it. The client can then order any number of suits, which are then made up and delivered within a four-to-six week period.
Adds Gifford: ?We?ve made the process almost as easy as ordering a takeaway, and the response so far has surpassed all of our expectations.?
Yet, while Gifford is the first to admit that its suits are definitely not handmade down to the last stitch, a la the tailoring paragons of Savile Row, they are still made to the highest exacting standards by specialist tailors and as worthy of the term ?bespoke? as any suit coming out of Savile Row.
